ASSESSMENT, WHAT-THAT?

Presenter: Kim Pudans Smith

Kim Pudans-Smith, Ed.D. is Assistant Professor in the Department of ASL and Deaf Studies at Gallaudet University, where she founded ASL Connect, and is Coordinator of ASL as a Second Language Program (ASL2).  Prior to Gallaudet, Dr. Pudans-Smith has taught ASL to second language learners as a foreign language at different colleges/universities in Delaware, Maryland and Washington, D.C. for 25 years.  She earned a Bachelor’s in Political Sciences, Master’s degree in Bilingual ASL/English Education, and doctoral degree in Deaf Studies and Deaf Education.  She has provided consultation and program development support regarding Deaf education to rural villages in Tanzania.  Her research interests include measuring success of second language learners acquiring ASL in an online environment, as well as measuring  attitudes toward signed languages and deafness among parents with deaf children.

Workshop Description:

For this virtual workshop, the participants will recognize the importance of ASL assessment by illustrating areas of language proficiency for beginning levels of ASL coursework to create a simple assessment tool. The participants will then view the videos, discuss their assessment of each video, and then explain the rationale for their assessment. Next, there will be a question and answer discussion. The goal of this workshop is for the participants to understand how to assess students’ ASL skills using rubrics and prepare to use rubrics in their classrooms.

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will explain the importance of ASL assessment
  • Participants will identify areas that need to be assessed
  • Participants will apply and analyze the video using the assessment provided
  • Participants will create their own assessment tool after the workshop ends
