ASL Teachers Association BoardEvery two years in the odd years, we hold nominations and elections for board positions and announce the newly elected board members at our National Professional Development Conference.
Nominations & Elections Committee
The Nominations and Elections Committee operates on an ad hoc basis, focusing on identifying, recruiting, and vetting nominations for the upcoming ASLTA board election. The members of this committee are committed to maintaining a fair election process that is unbiased and compliant with the bylaws.
Three positions—president, secretary, and professional development director —are open for nomination and election for the 2025 election. Please proceed below to learn more about these positions and the nomination and election process.
Announcement & Procedure
Nominations from the membership can be submitted to the Nominations and Elections Committee between 90 days prior to the biennial conference until 30 days prior to the biennial conference. (Bylaws Article VII, Section 3, #3A)

Nomination begins: April 10, 2025
Nomination closes: June 9, 2025

Hello ASLTA members! I’m Joanna Witulski, and I’m here to discuss the upcoming nominations and election. The committee consists of chairperson Rey Vega, Joy Schultz, and me.
We’re currently seeking nominations for three positions: President, Secretary, and Professional Development Director. If you have someone in mind who would be an excellent fit for one of these roles, please reach out to them to ensure they’re interested and meet the three requirements: certification, membership status, and committee experience. If you’re interested in serving on the board, you’re welcome to nominate yourself.
Both the President and Professional Development Director positions require ASLTA’s Master-level certification, while the Secretary position requires at least Certified-level certification. [Not mentioned in the video: With certification, the member is also required to have a membership in good standing for at least two years (since 2023 or before) and served on ASLTA’s committee for at least a year] Please refer below for more information about each position’s duties.

President (2025-2029)

Hello ASLTA members! I’m Joanna Witulski and I will be talking about what a president’s duties and responsibilities are. First of all, you are required to hold ASLTA’s master-level certification, membership have been in good standing for the past two consecutive years [not mentioned in the video “and have served on one of ASLTA committees for at least an year”] The responsibilities include running the General Business meeting, attending ASLTA conference, holding monthly board meetings as well as various special meetings for certain timeframes. Additionally, the president oversees the board members to make sure that they complete their required tasks. The president also represents ASLTA in different organizations. This position also is responsible for committees and ensures that they meet the expectation to complete tasks. The committees involve both the standing committee and AD-HOC committees. Secretary (2025-2029)

Hello, ASLTA members! I’m Joanne Witulski and I’m going to discuss about Secretary’s duties and responsibilities. First of all, there are two requirements before you could consider, membership been in good standing two consecutive years, currently holding ASLTA’s certified-level certification [not mentioned in the video “and have served on one of ASLTA committees for at least an year”]. Regarding the duties, you must attend our monthly meetings and any ASLTA events or activities. You are responsible for writing the minutes, making necessary corrections, and saving them in Google Drive. The minutes are stored in Google Drive until they are approved, after which they are sent to the webmaster for uploading to our website. This is the most essential duty of a secretary. You are also responsible for leading the Writing Committee, whose responsibilities include drafting position papers and similar documents based on motions made by the board or members. Lastly, you must manage the ASLTA files stored in our Google Drive. When a board member needs them, you will be the one to provide access. Additionally, you will complete any other necessary tasks the board or president assigns. Interested? Nominate yourself today!

Professional Development Director (2025-2029)

As for the job duties of this position, there are countless tasks, including developing and hosting webinars relating to ASL education field monthly, searched for the best qualified individuals to offer presentations to the members, CEU sponsors for certification, made the fliers for presentations and posting them through social media. The position also requires to be part of the conference planning committee, and providing ongoing support and communicating with board members. The position’s goal is to offer opportunities and develop resources to be distributed to ASLTA members for their professional growth. Are you passionated, motivated and creative?
