Questions From People Who Are Preparing For Certification
Under no circumstances should you email certification materials to the Evaluation Office. All documents must be uploaded to your digital portfolio.
Review the Certification Begins Here page to see if you are eligible for Certified or Master certification. If you meet all the criteria for Master certification, you can begin there, rather than starting with Certified.
If you meet all the requirements for Master certification, you can apply directly for that certification. You do not have to start with Certified.
If you do not meet the requirements for Master certification, you must start with the Certified certification.
After you pay the certification application fee, a digital portfolio will be set up for you. All of the required certification materials (transcripts, videos, documents, etc.) will be uploaded to your digital portfolio.
If you haven’t taken classes in ASL Literature, ASL Linguistics, or Deaf Culture/Community but have in-depth knowledge in these areas, you can take Course Verification Interviews instead.
How does a Course Verification Interview work?
You watch a question on video, and record your response in ASL. When you are finished answering all of the questions, the evaluators will analyze your responses. If the evaluators have questions on what you meant, they may ask for clarification or for you to re-do one or more videos.
What do the evaluators look for?
The evaluators want to see that you have the same knowledge that you would have if you took a class in ASL Literature, ASL Linguistics, or Deaf Culture/Community.
What if I do well / don’t do well?
If you do well, then the Course Verification Interview counts as a class.
If you don’t do well, then the evaluators will suggest you take a class before continuing with ASLTA certification.
Note: There is an additional fee per Course Verification Interview.
Unofficial transcripts documenting your degree/s and verification of coursework should be uploaded to your digital portfolio.
Many people with a M.A. degree in teaching ASL meet all the requirements for Master certification. Review the requirements for Certified and Master certification to check your eligibility.
